Bowen has been given many names including Gem of the Coral Coast, the Climate Capital of Australia, and the Northern Gateway to the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Bowen offers reef fishing, bushwalking and bird watching, with motel, hotel, caravan park and unit accommodation available.
These are indeed appropriate descriptions of this historic North Queensland town found halfway between Mackay and Townsville, and just a short drive north of the centre of the Whitsundays.
The climate, you know, is similar to the Hawaiian Islands minus all the rain. It's no wonder Southerners make it their winter escape, coming here to bask in the warm tropical sun.
Bowen has all the ingredients for the ideal holiday by the sea .... It has beautiful white sandy beaches ... clear blue water ... rocky coves, creeks and nearby reefs for fishing. ... islands .... and a whole lot more.
Most visitors arrive in Bowen by the "back door" passing the salt works and neighbouring evaporating pans, and at first glance there's little to entice one further.
The adventurous however, are rewarded with the charms and beauty of a town surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Coral Sea. With its ideal climate and aquatic attractions, Bowen is the ideal holiday destination for water sport enthusiasts.
One of Bowen's best kept secrets is it's string of beautiful beaches, described by some as the best in the Whitsundays, ranging from the wide open expanses of Kings and Queens Beaches to the intimate beauty of the palm fringed favourite of generations ... Horseshoe Bay.
For the visitor there are air-conditioned hotel motels, caravan parks, discos, bands and live performances as well as a wonderful historic cinema ... catering for all ages with great entrance prices
Bowen is just bursting with rural goodness, fresh from the surrounding farms. Tomatoes, cucumbers, rockmelons and zucchinis are some of the local produce sold in shops or roadside stalls, as well as the famous Bowen Special mango.
Bowen is the oldest established town in Queensland I'm told. It seems its popularity goes back a long .. long way.
Stroll through a town where the buildings are art galleries, and the walls are windows into the areas rich past. On the wall of the Powell Street newsagency for example you'll see the Case kids, Albert, Lil and Nancy with their goat Togo carting water from a well in Muller's lagoon in 1922.
There are 24 murals in the town area painted by various artists, and all are an excellent tribute to the town's pioneering past.
