Mission Beach, Tropical North Queensland, Australia offers tropical rainforest National Parks, the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting, bushwalking, beach combing, snorkelling, fishing, cruises, wild life including the cassowary with a wide range of accommodation.

Mission Beach is called "The Real Tropics" A drive from the South Mission boat ramp to Garners Beach in the north will give you the opportunity to see natural rainforest growing right down to the water's edge. Included in the many thousands of species of plant life are hibiscus, palms, coconuts, caliphillum, paw paws, bananas, mangoes and lawyer cane - and of course, everything is so vividly green.

A clean, white palm fringed beach that seems to go on forever is second to none with golden sand lapped by the beautiful Coral Sea, tamed by the Great Barrier Reef and nearby Dunk Island seems to hover on top of the water.

This is Cassowary country, and home to one of Australia's rare and flightless birds.

They grow to about 1.6m tall which puts them second only to the Emu. It has a bright red and blue colouring on its bare neck and its body is covered with long hairy-like water resistant feathers and a large boney like crown on its head.

Please drive carefully if you see them on the road as not only are they are quite rare, they can do a fair bit of damage to your car as well.

They are often seen venturing into caravan parks and camp sites looking for food, but it is advisable to steer clear of them as they can inflict serious injuries if they get cranky. Bird watchers can see many other smaller birds inhabit the area as well as the famous "Dunk Island Butterfly"

Cruises along the nearby Hull River enable visitors to see the prolific birdlife as well as the natural rainforest and vegetation that line the river and the hugh estaurine crocodiles that live here.
